Poppies

Poppies

2025

Leiden, Netherlands

This work depicts three poppy pods my friend gave me as inspiration for a new painting. I deliberately aimed to create a dark, almost mysterious atmosphere — a visual nod to the opium kit, the shadowy domain in which this plant has gained notoriety. The deep, nearly black background forms a dramatic stage for the expressive colors of the seed pods.

The composition runs diagonally from the top left to the bottom right — an arrangement I also explored in my painting of the physalis. I contrasted warm and cool tones in the poppies: glowing orange and yellow highlights are set against cool blue and purple shadows, creating emotional tension that echoes the psychological weight of the subject.

Acrylic allows me to bring this duality directly onto the canvas. The brushwork follows not only the form of the seed pods, but also the ambivalent meaning the poppy carries. The result is a work where natural beauty and darkness merge — the elegant shape of the poppy set against a background that evokes its more ominous associations. This tension between light and dark, between beauty and danger, is fully expressed through the color palette.
