Cotton

Cotton

2024

Leiden, Netherlands

This work marked an important step in my artistic development toward a more expressive painting style. I started with a few branches of dried cotton my friend had given me. I photographed them in bright sunlight on my balcony, where the contrast between the soft, white cotton bolls and the dramatic lighting provided a fascinating visual reference.

For this acrylic painting, I developed a systematic approach using two separate color palettes. The first palette moved from dark to light using warm tones — burnt umber, red, and yellow — while the second followed the same value range in cool tones: black, blue, and white. This methodical preparation allowed me to apply the palettes more or less interchangeably, working in stages that corresponded to the values in my photographic reference.

The result is a dynamic composition in which the fluffy texture of the cotton comes to life through the interplay of warm and cool tones. Blue accents dance between the orange and red planes, while the white cotton bolls function as highlights against the dark background. This work reflects my search for balance between technical discipline and expressive freedom.
